The former Abbey Cinema occupies a prominent corner site on Church Road North in Wavertree. Designed by Sir Alfred Ernest Shennan and opened in 1939, it is an increasingly rare surviving example of a large inter-war “super cinema”, combining Moderne, Art Deco and International Style influences. Later converted for supermarket, bingo and snooker uses, the building has stood vacant since 2020. It is now offered for sale and requires a viable conservation-led future capable of retaining its significant historic fabric while returning this important local landmark to sustainable use. Historic England lists it at Grade II and specifically identifies surviving elements including the foyer stair, wooden mosaic floors, fluted ceiling domes, auditorium ceiling, balcony structure and former projection rooms.
