Richard Ireland is the UK's leading conservation consultant specializing in the repair, conservation, and restoration of historic decorative plaster and paint. Operating as an independent consultant, he also serves as an adviser on plasterwork for Historic England's Building Conservation and Research Team. His mission is to preserve and restore the intricate plaster and paintwork that adorn historic buildings, ensuring their longevity and historical integrity. With a career spanning several decades, Richard has collaborated with numerous public bodies, including English Heritage, Westminster City Council, Historic Royal Palaces, the Royal Household Property Services, the Office of Public Works in Ireland, the National Trust, Historic Scotland, and various ecclesiastical organizations. His work typically involves a combination of archaeological investigation, scientific analysis, and contextual historic research to provide comprehensive conservation solutions. Richard's expertise encompasses both plain and decorative plaster, internal and external finishes, paint analysis, and the reinstatement of historic schemes. He provides on-site direction according to his specifications and liaises between clients and contractors to ensure the best possible outcomes, working within listed building regulations and alongside local authority conservation officers. His projects range from small farmhouse interiors to major works such as the British Museum and The Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
