Victorian Tile Services is a specialist family-run tiling practice based in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, providing restoration, repair and installation of traditional Victorian tiled floors and pathways.
Owner Walter Croft is a third-generation tiler who began working in the trade in 1995 and has nearly 30 years of practical experience. The practice works with both original historic tiles and high-quality reproduction material.
Victorian floor restoration
Victorian Tile Services restores original geometric tiled floors in period properties. Work typically begins with a site survey and assessment to identify damaged tiles, movement, substrate failure and other defects.
Repairs may range from replacing individual broken pieces to lifting and relaying substantial areas where the underlying floor has failed. Traditional and contemporary construction techniques are combined where appropriate to provide a sound base while retaining the character of the original floor.
Tile matching and replacement
Plain geometric tiles can be matched using reclaimed and modern replacements. Where patterned encaustic tiles are rare or unavailable, specially made replacements can be commissioned to reproduce missing designs.
Reproduction Victorian floors
The practice also supplies and installs new traditionally styled geometric floors. It works with reproduction tiles from established manufacturers including Olde English, Original Style and Craven Dunnill.
Services include design advice, site assessment, preparation of the substrate and complete supply and installation.
Victorian pathways
Exterior work includes tiled paths, entrance areas and steps. Services include structural repairs, removal and replacement of defective screeds, substrate preparation, installation of rope or edge-border tiles, stone coping and bullnose steps.
Cleaning and sealing
Original tiled floors can be deep-cleaned after repairs using rotary equipment to remove ingrained dirt, waxes and previous finishes. Breathable penetrating sealers are then applied to protect the floor while retaining its natural appearance.
Surveys and listed-building work
Written assessments can be prepared following site surveys, including for insurance claims and listed-building proposals. The service includes design consultancy, structural assessment, tile matching and recommendations for repair.
Victorian Tile Services has completed restoration and reproduction projects throughout London and Hertfordshire, including Muswell Hill, Crouch End, Highbury, Walthamstow, Clapham, Wimbledon, Barnet and Broxbourne.
