The Architects Accredited in Building Conservation (AABC) is a UK-based, not-for-profit accreditation body established in 1998 with the support of English Heritage (now Historic England). Its primary mission is to promote the highest standards of specialist architectural skills in the conservation, repair, and adaptation of the historic built environment. By maintaining a register of architects whose expertise has been rigorously assessed through peer review, AABC aims to protect historic buildings from inappropriate interventions and ensure that clients have access to qualified professionals for their conservation projects. AABC's register serves as a valuable resource for clients, including property owners, grant-awarding organizations, and preservation societies, seeking architects with proven competence in building conservation. The accreditation process involves a thorough evaluation of an architect's experience, technical expertise, and understanding of conservation principles, ensuring that only those with the requisite skills are included. This process helps prevent damaging interventions to historic structures by individuals lacking suitable qualifications. In addition to maintaining the register, AABC offers a mentoring scheme designed to assist post-Part II graduates in developing their conservation skills. To celebrate and promote excellence in building conservation, AABC collaborates with the Civic Trust to present the AABC Conservation Awards. These awards recognize projects that demonstrate the highest standards of historic building conservation. Additionally, AABC organizes seminars, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities, and engages AABC Ambassadors to promote conservation accreditation to architecture students and the public at heritage sector events, furthering awareness and education in the field.
