About the Practice

Beyond Carbon is a specialist consultancy in heritage retrofit, Passivhaus and low-carbon building performance. It supports clients and design teams working on institutional, educational, commercial and larger residential buildings, combining energy modelling with practical advice on building fabric, comfort and carbon reduction.

Heritage retrofit and insulation strategies

The practice develops retrofit plans that bring together insulation, airtightness, thermal-bridge reduction and low-carbon heating. Work includes feasibility studies, fabric improvement strategies and heat decarbonisation plans, with attention to existing construction, heritage significance, moisture behaviour and practical delivery.

Building physics and energy modelling

Services include PHPP and DesignPH modelling, thermal-bridge calculations, WUFI moisture analysis, dynamic simulation, overheating assessments and daylight modelling. These tools help design teams compare options and understand the effects of proposed alterations on energy demand, indoor conditions and building fabric.

Passivhaus, EnerPHit and whole-life carbon

Beyond Carbon provides design consultancy for Passivhaus and EnerPHit projects, technical support for contractors, and independent certification services through qualified team members. Its carbon consultancy considers emissions associated with materials and construction alongside those arising during building operation. Services include whole-life carbon assessment, material comparisons and estate decarbonisation roadmaps.

Heritage experience

At Grade II* listed Frewin Hall in Oxford, Beyond Carbon acted as energy and retrofit consultant, helping develop internal woodfibre insulation and airtightness measures supported by physical testing and moisture analysis.

At The Arc in Winchester, the practice contributed to a decarbonisation plan for a cultural venue incorporating a Grade II* listed building and a modern extension. Energy modelling was informed by measured fabric performance to help target appropriate improvements.

The practice expanded through its merger with Delta Q in September 2026 and has bases in Bicester, London and Bristol.

Contact Beyond Carbon to discuss heritage estates, complex retrofit schemes and larger building projects requiring specialist energy and carbon advice.
